The Spirit of Westport

A boat-building program for Westport Junior High School Students!

The Spirit of Westport is a free hands-on program that brings students out of the classroom, into the wood shop and onto the water. This program is a partnership with Westport Community Schools and will be fully integrated into the 8th grade curriculum. Under the direction of Dharma Voyage’s Executive Director Ben Booth, students will participate in all phases of building a 32’ Cornish Pilot Gig, to be christened: The Spirit of Westport.

Collaborating with Westport Fisherman’s Association, Westport River Watershed Alliance, Westport Historical Society, and Westport Education Foundation we’ve developed an interdisciplinary course where students will learn:

Woodworking and Joinery
Applied Science and Math Skills
Local and Naval History
Nautical Skills.

As the boat is finished in June, all building participants will have the option of joining our youth summer rowing and taking their creation out on the water.  The Spirit of Westport will join the other boats of Dharma Voyage for use in our highly popular rowing programs. These boats serve as a resource for the entire Westport community allowing participants to experience the rich diversity of our coastal river and wetland environments.

The Spirit of Westport will be completed in the Spring of 2016.

The Spirit of Westport is supported in part through generous grants from The Westport Education Foundation and The Westport Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
