— Coastal Rowing with Ben Booth—

We are happy to announce, in conjunction with the Westport Recreation Department we are offering a low-cost 10 week Coastal Rowing summer program for ages 15-23 with premiere rowing instructor, Ben Booth.

This is the ultimate summer experience for teens and young adults! Learn how to row a sliding seat coastal boat and take it on an adventure. The program stars by learning the basics of rowing and boat handling on the protected Westport or Slocums River waters. As the crew strengthens, we progress into more exposed coastal waters and get into waves. Learn how to pull over steep waves and to feel the speed of surfing the seas.

Coastal rowing involves sculling with two oars and sliding seats in ocean sturdy boats. This kind of rowing is supported by teh international rowing body and is the fastest growing aspect of global rowing. It is under consideration as an Olympic sport. In this program, we use a 35' FISA coastal racing quad (quadruple sculls), which is a responsive and seaworthy boat, ready to tackle waves and coastal challenges with a crew of four plus coxswain.

For those with multiple years of experience in this program, there may be the opportunity to be involved in an expedition to distant horizons, such as a row from Westport out to Penikese and Cuttyhunk Islands for a weekend of exploration. Expedition destinations are determined by the level of the team, and participants are encouraged to enroll for multiple years to increase their skills and level of challenges.

*It is a requirement for all of the participants who register to know how to swim.
*An email will go out before the program to let you know what to wear and bring.

This is the ultimate summer experience for teens and young adults! Learn how to row a sliding-seat coastal boat and take it on an adventure. The program starts by learning the basics of rowing and boat handling on the protected Westport River waters. Once participants gain sufficient skills, the next step is to row sheltered coastal waters. As the crew strengthens, we progress into more exposed coastal waters and get into waves. Learn how to pull over steep waves and to feel the speed of surfing the seas. The program culminates in an expedition to distant horizons. In 2017, our team rowed from Westport out to Penikese and Cuttyhunk Islands for a weekend of exploration.

Expedition destinations are determined by the level of the team, and participants are encouraged to enroll for multiple years to increase their skills and level of challenges.

We also partner with other local organizations to leverage their programs as well as ours, most recently with Missionaries of Charity, and The Next Step Program.
